In this presentation, I will report on the current state and the upgrade plans for the Abilene Network, an Internet2 high-performance IP backbone in the United States.

Starting this summer, Abilene will be upgraded to use 10-Gbps optical circuits. This next generation of Abilene will offer expanded support for native, high-performance IPv6 and enhanced and differentiated membership capabilities. We also will review the technology behdind long-range optical transmission and examine how this is enabling the development of optically based networks on the metropolitan and regional scale.
