2008-2009 Competitions
Visiting Fellows Program

The Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies at the University of California, San Diego invites applications for research fellowships and non-stipend Guest Scholar affiliations for the 2008-2009 academic year.  The Center’s Visiting Fellows Program is the largest residential fellowship program in the United States for research on Mexico.  Each year the program brings together scholars from the social sciences, history, and related fields. The Center’s current research priorities are on issues of economic and social policy with a special emphasis on economic growth, financial markets and infrastructure, and social and economic policy.

The majority of Research Fellows and Guest Scholars are expected to be at the postdoctoral level. PhD candidates who are ABD and have completed a substantial portion of their dissertations will also be considered.  Senior scholars are encouraged to apply.  The majority of the fellowship awards are for residential periods between 4 and 10 months in duration. However, two-year postdoctoral awards may be considered.  Fellowship stipends are commensurate with experience and academic rank.
Awards support research on any aspect of contemporary Mexico, Mexican history, and U.S.-Mexican relations.  Comparative studies with a substantial Mexico component are especially encouraged. The Center also encourages proposals from groups of two or more scholars working on a common project.  Additional funding may be available to groups for workshops or short-term visits by other scholars relevant to the project area.

The majority of the funds are earmarked for individuals who are (1) Mexican citizens, (2) residents of Mexico of any nationality, or (3) advanced graduate students, recent PhD recipients, or faculty from any campus of the University of California system.

The Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies is an organized research unit of UCSD dedicated to research on Mexico and U.S.-Mexican relations.  The Center’s programs include an active visiting scholars program, an annual Summer Seminar in U.S. Studies, research projects related to policy and policymaking in Mexico, and a series of conferences and workshops.

The review of applications will begin on December 14,2007 and will continue until all fellowships are awarded.

ECONOMIC POLICY FELLOWSHIP

A consensus has developed among Mexican policymakers that only by restructuring the economy can the country increase its global competitiveness and prospects for all citizens. The Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies at the University of California, San Diego invites applications (open to applicants from any discipline) for research related to economic policy in Mexico. We encourage scholars that examine Mexico’s financial infrastructure and take on such tasks as identifying barriers to entrepreneurship and several other elements of Mexico’s economy.  Economic Policy Fellows can be either postdocs or ABD doctoral students and are expected to be in residence for a period of one to two academic years and to teach an average of one class per year in an academic unit of UCSD.

Stipends are commensurate with experience and academic rank. The majority of the funds are earmarked for individuals who are (1) Mexican citizens, (2) residents of Mexico of any nationality, or (3) advanced graduate students, recent PhD recipients, or faculty from any campus of the University of California system.  Candidates should apply for an Economic Policy Fellowship as part of the Center’s annual Visiting Fellows Program competition.
